Keynote Speaker for The Napoleon Hill
Days
In October 2008 I was priviledged to be asked to be the
keynote speaker to the students and area business leaders
during the Napoleon Hill Days in Wise, Virginia.
It was a great honor to speak to these current and future
leaders and share a few words with them and give them a copy of
my book, One More
Sunset, and my Coin.
In the summer of 2007, during a weekend
with Lou Holtz, I took a side trip to my
hometown of Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania.
Imagine the emotions I felt when for the first time in
50 years I walked back into the pool hall I used to rack
balls at and there was the same guy behind the counter -
Yunko. I introduced myself and the next words out of his
mouth were "I read your book".
"The projects" where I
grew up were WWII row houses, hastily erected during the war to
provide low income housing for factory workers. They were built
as duplexes with paper thin walls. 50 years later and they're
still standing. And people still live in them.
Lou and I have had a very special
relationship for 20+ years. I have a great deal of
admiration for him and was honored to be chosen as a
trustee for his "Upper Ohio Valley Lou Holtz Hall of
Fame".
Each year hundreds of
generous people gather in Liverpool, Ohio to donate
scholarships to worthy students and also honor men and
women who have "given back".
Nina Hershberger, my
business partner and Vice President of one of my companies
joined us at the scholarship weekend.
Just spending a weekend with
"the Coach" is always a wonderful time.
Speaking
at the Napoleon Hill Institute
If it weren't for the book "Think and Grow
Rich" by Napoleon Hill I would not be where I am
today.
Dr. Hill wrote that book in
1937. I say he wrote it for me since that was the year I
was born. The 17 principles he layed out in that book and
others has been the cornerstone of who I am.
When I was asked to speak to
an international group of Napoleon Hill Institute students,
I counted it a privilege to say "yes". What made the trip
all the more special for me was that Donna Jones, the brain
injured young woman who's story is told in the book
"One More Sunset" was with me.
It was Dr. Hill's story of
how he never gave up to help his son hear that gave me the
courage never to give up during the darkest hours with
Donna.
